One day this beautiful tri calico kitten walked into a school and chose to make that place her home. She quickly won over the school community and became a loved and well known fixture on campus. She was given a red collar with a bell and named Liu Yi. There are numerous photos of Liu Yi on the school grounds, quite often a hand reaching down to give her a pat or chin scratch.
That Liu Yi was betrayed by one of the students and in a place she had made her home and safe haven, makes what happened to her heartbreaking. On March 23rd 2026, a female student at the middle school in Fujian Province used a knife to stab her multiple times causing her death. The female student did not try to hide her actions, she had no fear of consequences and she showed no empathy for Liu Yi or her fellow students who had grown to love this little cat.
One of the students said afterwards, "The kitten named 'Liu Yi' came to our school last year when it was just a tiny kitten. It grew up surrounded by the love of its classmates and now it's gone. Everyone is heartbroken."
What happened to Liu Yi is sadly not uncommon. Torturing and killings of cats on school and college campuses is something that happens quite regularly in China. With no animal welfare laws, no repercussions for those who profit off animal torture and a widespread apathetic attitude, there are more and more cases reported of children abusing and killing cats.
Liu Yi chose that school. She trusted those students. She deserved better than what she got, and she will be remembered for the love she gave, not the violence that ended it.
